Optimum Image size for a pano

Postby dvetta » Tue Feb 05, 2008 10:51 pm

Hello Friends;

What would you feel to be the optimum image size for a panorama which will mostly be viewed on the internet? I want a happy medium and a quick download time.

Also, the round circle that people create to cover the nadir..how is that added to the panorama, i realize it is probably done in PTGUI, which i have, i just cant figure out how to do this.

Hi dave.
For fullsize panoramas I use 6000x3000 pix.
that is enough and when you optimise your jpeg it is not that large.

for the nadir shot there are 3 ways of doing that.
there is a sample in the documentation for an external nadir picture.
and you can put it in your image.

But this is for me the best.. Use superrune his plugin for photoshop.
http://www.superrune.com/technical/soft ... ocubic.php
best to use 8bit images for that because it is pretty heavy on CPU use.

If you do not own photoshop you can render the top and nadir in ptgui by changing the pitch and roll to 90 if I remember right.
remember to turn fast tranform off! patch the nadir and reder it back again.
now patch that image over your original and erase all stuff in the middle. of you patched image. because that quality is less as your original file.

I hope you understand.

good luck! 8)

6000x3000 thats huge.... how about load time????

realtors and end users too, want the pano's to load quick....

is this still advisable... oh and of course i have not a clue what you mean about the nadir and zenith patch... i did download the program though...

im gonna need some help friend...if you got time.

well if you do not want to use fullscreen you can go smaller.
you could also use a small and a big version. So that it loads a new file if you want fullscreen, but i never done that.
quick loading is not that essential. That you see something is happening is!
so a good loader or that you start with a low res preview image.
my images are around 2 mb.

for zenith and nadir patch you can read some stuff here.
http://www.rosaurophotography.com/html/technical0.html

some small tutorial. rune spaans plugin.
load image in photoshop and make a copy of the layer.
use rune spaans plugin in photoshop on that copy layer.

Image

patch your nadir shot the way you want. a nadircap or whatever.
Image

use rune spaans plugin to turn back your image.
Image

voila. final image.

Image

pt gui tutorial.

load you image in ptgui
Image

settings:
Equirectangular and field of view 360x180
Advanced settings, Equirectangular and also 360 degree.
Lens settings: pitch -90 roll 90.
Render. tiff 16 bits no compression
Fast transform OFF!

image to edit in photoshop:
Image

now you can patch the nadirshot again.
save as tiff 16bit.
now load all in ptgui again.
all same settings exept for yaw 90 en roll -90
render the same way.
A small trick is after the image is ready. load it into photoshop and make LAB colors of it.
In channels you can see on layer (don't know the english one) light or something.
use shadow and highlight on that layer. makes the image pop out a little more.

final photo.

Actually 4096 x 2048 for the end result is on the edge but will do for full screen. I learned that in another thread on this forum and am usng it since then. However, when I am still working on the panorama. I work with 6000x3000 in 16 bit TIF format. Only in the last step, I resize it to 4096x2048 8 bits jpeg.
